Waiting for Private School Admission Decisions? A Time to Reflect

The waiting can be the hardest part

For many families, the weeks leading up to private school admissions decisions can feel like the longest stretch of the entire process. After months of applications, interviews, and school visits, it’s completely natural to feel anxious. Yet this in‑between moment, while undeniably stressful, can also be a valuable opportunity for reflection.

Throughout the admissions journey, you’ve likely observed your child in situations that revealed new aspects of who they are. You may have noticed how they communicate in an interview—whether they speak readily or take time to warm up. You’ve seen them stretch academically, showing strengths in some areas and encountering challenges in others. These experiences offer a more complete and nuanced picture of your child’s learning profile and emerging sense of self.

Just as importantly, this process has prompted you to articulate your beliefs about what your child needs in order to thrive. “Thriving” is not a one‑size‑fits‑all concept. For one child, thriving might mean being challenged each day by rigorous coursework; for another, it might mean having abundant extracurriculars where they can explore interests beyond the classroom. Some children are most at home in small, tight‑knit communities where they feel deeply known; others flourish in larger environments with diverse peers and wide opportunities. Reflecting on these differences helps clarify not just what schools offer, but what truly supports your child’s growth.

This is the moment to revisit those insights.

  • What environments have historically brought out your child’s confidence?

  • Where do they feel most energized, curious, and motivated?

  • What kinds of structure—or flexibility—help them to strive?

These questions matter far beyond admissions decisions. They shape how you advocate for your child, the opportunities you seek out, and the ways you guide them through future transitions.

Regardless of the outcome on decision day, you’re walking away with something incredibly valuable: knowledge. You’ve spent time thinking about your child’s strengths, their areas for growth, and the kind of school environment where you believe they will do well; and along the way, you’ve articulated to yourself your own hopes and priorities as a parent. That insight will continue to serve you as you guide your child through, not only their next school selection, but through many of life’s future chapters.

May you enjoy the journey!

Best wishes,

Elizabeth
